Meet The Artist

“I fell in love with silk velvet flowers not because they were perfect, but because they were alive. Every twist of thread by Nanjing’s aging masters whispered centuries of women’s stories—stories too bold to fade. At SilkBloom, we melt tradition into modern shapes: jewelry that’s fragile yet unbreakable, like the women who wear it. These aren’t just accessories. They’re heirlooms of rebellion, crafted to outlive trends and time.”

History of Velvet Flower

In ancient China, velvet flowers were exclusively worn by royalty and nobility due to their exquisite craftsmanship and high material costs. Originating from the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE), they symbolized "prosperity and glory" (荣华, Ronghua), a homophone of their name, and were initially reserved for imperial concubines.

Cultural Symbolism

The name "绒花" (róng huā) homophones with "荣华" (róng huá, meaning "prosperity and glory"), making it a popular emblem of good fortune and blessings. These flowers were traditionally worn during festivals, weddings, and ceremonies to convey auspicious wishes. Designs often drew inspiration from nature (e.g., peonies, phoenixes) and Chinese art, blending traditional and modern aesthetics.

Craftsmanship

  • Materials: Made from 100% mulberry silk and copper wire (or silver wire for royal use).
  • Process: Involves nine meticulous steps: refining silk, dyeing, drying, shaping with copper wire, ironing, trimming, assembling, gluing, and packaging. Artisans handcraft each petal by combing silk strands with pig bristles and shaping them into delicate, lifelike forms.
  • Features: Vibrant colors (red, pink, gold) and durability (non-withering), allowing them to outlast natural flowers.

Modern Revival & Challenges

Listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage in Jiangsu (2006), velvet flowers regained attention through cultural initiatives and media exposure (e.g., historical dramas like Story of Yanxi Palace and the Beijing Winter Olympics award bouquets). However, the craft faces challenges like declining artisans and industrial competition. Masters like Zhao Shuxian, Nanjing’s sole official inheritor, strive to preserve the tradition through workshops and innovative designs
