How to Clean Sterling Silver at Home
Difficulty: easy · Time: 10 minutes · Applies to: 925 sterling silver jewelry
Sterling silver darkens because silver reacts with sulfur in air and moisture, forming a dark surface layer. It is not damage — and it is fully reversible. Here is the routine we recommend, in order of gentleness.
What you need
- A silver polishing cloth (the workhorse — keep one at home)
- Mild dish soap and warm water
- A soft toothbrush
- A dry, lint-free cloth
Step 1 — Light tarnish? Polish only
For everyday dullness, rub the piece with a polishing cloth until bright. This handles 90% of cases and takes under a minute.
Step 2 — Heavier tarnish: soap and water
Wash the piece in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Use the soft toothbrush for crevices and behind settings. Rinse well.
Step 3 — Dry completely
Pat dry, then air-dry a few minutes before storing. Trapped moisture speeds up the next round of tarnish.
Step 4 — Polish and inspect
Finish with the polishing cloth and check clasps and settings while you have it in hand.
Step 5 — Store it shut
Keep silver in the sealed pouch provided. Air is what tarnishes it — less air, less tarnish.
Two habits that prevent most tarnish
Wear your silver often — skin contact keeps it bright. And put it on after perfume, taking it off before swimming or the gym.
