How to Choose Jade: A First-Time Buyer's Checklist
Level: beginner · Time: a 10-minute read · Applies to: buying natural jade jewelry online
Jade is bought on trust more than on photos. Screen colors vary, and treatments are invisible to the eye. These five checks — four you can do yourself, one that is entirely on the seller — make an online jade purchase much safer.
1. Know the two words that matter
"Jade" covers two distinct stones: nephrite and jadeite. They differ in density and price ranges, and a seller should always say which one a piece is. If a listing only says "jade," ask.
2. Ask about treatment, plainly
Natural (untreated) jade, dyed jade, and polymer-filled jade all exist on the market. None is illegal — but dyed or filled stone sold as natural is a scam. A trustworthy seller states the treatment on the product page.
3. Feel the weight and temperature
Real jade is dense for its size and feels cool at first touch, warming slowly in the hand. Glass imitations feel warmer and lighter. This is a quick, honest test you can do the day your piece arrives.
4. Look at it under real light
Hold the piece near a window: natural stone shows an even, fibrous or granular structure; heavily treated stone can look too perfect, with a glassy evenness and color pooled at edges.
5. Buy where disclosure is the default
Every jade product page in our shop states the stone type and any treatment, and photography is done under controlled light without color enhancement. Combined with our 30-day return policy, checks 1–4 become your confirmation — not your only protection.
